Lighting Which will Encourage Flowering

Bougainvillea love sun they only flower if given proper sun.   They need full sun and very hot sun to fully bloom.

Soil For Your Bougainvillea Bonsai

Be sure your pots have good holes in the bottom, so you will have good drainage. Use good potting soil mixed with rich compost.  Bougainvillea like to have their roots crowded in the pot.  Make sure you use a small enough pot and restrict the root growth.

Fertilizing

Fertilize with any  12-4-18 fertilizer.  Hibiscus Food would be perfect because it has more potash than many other fertilizers. Be sure to measure properly according to the size of your pot.  If I am using a pot with a 10 inch diameter I would give my plants one quarter cup once a month as stated in the instructions.

Trimming

I’ve learned blossoms like to grow on new wood, and the more you cut them back, the more blossoms you will get.  Their vibrant color does not come from their small white tubular flowers, but from the three large paper-like bracts that surround each flower.
